Peppers Mexican Grill opens in Tecumseh Plaza
There’s a new restaurant in town at 1410 W. Chicago Blvd. in Tecumseh Plaza, and owners Marcos and Maria Garcia hope Peppers Mexican Grill becomes part of the Tecumseh community. Opened December 21, the restaurant is another step in the business journey for the Garcias.
Marcos first began working in a restaurant kitchen in Toledo, Ohio in 1998. “When I lived in Toledo, I always wanted to live in Michigan. I always liked Michigan, and when we got married I always told Maria I wanted to live in Michigan and open a business here,” he said. On the way to that goal, he opened his first restaurant in Greenville, Illinois, in 2008. Eventually, after the couple married in 2010, Maria said they began looking for Michigan locations.
“He started working in kitchens and as a waiter, and it was always his dream to open a restaurant,” she said. In 2017 they opened a Michigan location in Houghton Lake, and a year later another one in Bad Axe. Eventually they closed the Houghton Lake location because the business was mostly seasonal, and on June 9, 2019 they moved that operation to Milan, where the family lives. “We’re doing very well here,” said Marcos. “The Bad Axe location was doing good, but it was too far for us so we decided to move that one to Tecumseh.”
The couple also have their hands full with three young children, ages four, six and nine, who are learning how to run a business whenever they can spend time in the restaurant. “The nine year old, he wants to work on the cash register,” Maria said.
Maria said one popular dish they make at Peppers is fajabo, which is bed of rice with steak and chicken cooked with onion and tomato, topped with cheese sauce and cilantro. Special items on the menu include baked potato fajita, which is a choice of grilled chicken or steak, mixed with bacon, onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers, served on a bed of rice, topped with cheddar cheese and white cheese sauce and garnished with cilantro. Another menu item is a piña loca, a half pineapple stuffed with grilled steak, chicken, and shrimp, sautéed with fresh pineapple, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes, topped with shredded cheese and avocado slices and served with rice, lettuce, sour cream, pico de gallo and three tortillas. Fajitas, enchiladas, seafood, steaks, chicken dishes, vegetarian items, and desserts round out the menu, and they have lunch specials, as well. According to Maria, another popular menu item is the street tacos.
“The people are very nice. I think they’re accepting us,” said Maria. “We don’t live here, we live in Milan, but we wanted to be the same, we wanted to be part of Tecumseh like we are a part of Milan.”
Peppers Mexican Grill is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. To order, customers may call 517.815.1283 or come to the restaurant, and can find a menu and additional information on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
“I think people are liking our food,” she said. “We have customers that have already been here three or four times and we’re starting to know who they are.”
