Accident claims life of Tecumseh police officer

The Tecumseh Police Department is mourning the loss of a 23-year veteran of the force after Sergeant Darrin Lee Briggs, 45, of Jerome, passed away Monday, Dec. 14 during a tree-cutting accident at his home.

The department released a statement, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that the Tecumseh Police Department announces the passing of Patrol Sergeant Darrin Briggs. Briggs died from injuries sustained in an accident at his residence in Hillsdale County. Sgt. Briggs worked faithfully for the Tecumseh Police Department since July 16, 1997 and until his untimely death.”

Briggs was born March 19, 1975 in Coldwater to Daniel Briggs and Rebecca (Kipp) Briggs-Myers. He married Rebecca “Becky” Drake on April 3, 1998 and she survives.

After his graduation from Reading High School in 1993 he earned a bachelor’s degree in conservation law enforcement from Lake Superior State University and was hired as a police officer for the City of Tecumseh. According to his obituary, he was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and working on anything outside.

Briggs will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Friday, Dec. 18 in Reading, Mich. “Please keep his wife, Becky, and his family and friends, in your thoughts during this very difficult time,” stated the press release.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Moscow Fire Department.
